Hair loss is something most of us will experience at some point in life. While it’s often associated with aging, the truth is, hair thinning and shedding can start earlier than expected — and for a variety of reasons. Understanding why hair loss happens is the first step toward finding the right solution. At SkinMD, we’re here to explain the science behind it and how a hair transplant can help you restore not just your hair, but your confidence. The Science Behind Hair Loss Your hair grows in cycles: anagen (growth phase), catagen (transition phase), and telogen (resting/shedding phase). Normally, most of your hair is in the growth phase, but certain factors can disrupt this balance, causing more hairs to enter the shedding phase. The most common cause is androgenetic alopecia — better known as male or female pattern baldness. This is driven by genetics and hormones, specifically dihydrotestosterone (DHT) , a byproduct of testosterone that can shrink hair follicles over time. As the follicles shrink, the hair becomes thinner, shorter, and eventually stops growing altogether. Other factors that can accelerate or trigger hair loss include: Hormonal changes from pregnancy, menopause, or thyroid imbalances Nutritional deficiencies such as low iron, protein, or vitamin D Stress — both physical (illness, surgery) and emotional Medical conditions like autoimmune disorders or scalp infections While some of these causes are temporary and reversible, genetic hair loss tends to be progressive without treatment.

Hair loss can impact more than just your appearance—it can affect your confidence, your self-image, and how you feel every time you look in the mirror. Fortunately, advanced hair restoration treatments like Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) at Skin MD Michigan in Dearborn, are changing the game for men and women seeking a permanent, natural-looking solution to hair thinning and baldness. What Is FUE? Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a minimally invasive hair transplant technique that involves extracting individual hair follicles from a donor area—usually the back or sides of the scalp—and transplanting them to areas where hair is thinning or balding. Unlike older methods that involve removing a strip of scalp, FUE is precise, less invasive, and leaves no linear scar, making it an ideal option for many patients. Each hair follicle is carefully removed using a specialized punch tool and then re-implanted one by one into the targeted area. This meticulous process allows for a natural-looking hairline and dense, even coverage that blends seamlessly with your existing hair.

Botox and dermal fillers are popular treatments that help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and volume loss, providing a youthful, refreshed appearance. To get the best results, it's crucial to follow the proper pre- and post-treatment care. Here’s what you need to know for your Botox and filler treatments at SkinMD. What Do Botox and Fillers Do? Botox is an injectable neurotoxin that temporarily relaxes the muscles causing wrinkles, such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. Dermal Fillers restore lost volume and smooth deeper wrinkles, commonly used on areas like the lips, cheeks, and nasolabial folds. Before Your Appointment To ensure a smooth treatment and optimal results, follow these tips before your appointment: Avoid Blood Thinners : Refrain from taking NSAIDs like aspirin, ibuprofen, or Aleve for one week before your appointment, as these can increase bruising. No Alcohol : Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to treatment to reduce bruising risks. Cold Sores : If you have a history of cold sores, especially around the mouth, inform your provider a few days before your appointment. Medication can be prescribed to prevent an outbreak. Dental Procedures : Avoid dental work for at least two weeks before and after dermal filler treatments to avoid complications. Hydrate and Eat : Be sure to drink water and eat before your appointment to avoid feeling lightheaded. Pre-Treatment Supplements : Consider taking Arnica or Bromelain to reduce bruising and swelling, and Tylenol 1 hour before the procedure for added comfort. Health Restrictions : Botox and dermal fillers are not recommended for pregnant or nursing individuals or those with certain neuromuscular disorders. After Your Appointment Proper aftercare is essential for the best results. Here’s how to care for yourself after treatment: Swelling and Bruising : Mild swelling, redness, and bruising are common but should subside within a few days. A cold compress can help reduce swelling during the first 24 hours. Hydrate : Drink plenty of water to support healing. Eating pineapple or continuing Arnica and Bromelain supplements may also help with recovery. Elevate Your Head : Sleep with your head elevated for the first few nights to minimize swelling. Makeup : Wait 24 hours before applying makeup to reduce the risk of infection. Be Patient : It can take up to two weeks for the full effects to appear, so be patient as your results settle. Follow-Up Treatments : Follow-up treatments may be recommended to maintain or enhance your results. Consult your provider for guidance.
